FAQs for AI grading

Updated this week

How it works

1. How does AI-assisted grading work on Toddle?

Toddle AI grades student work in two steps:

  1. Creates an evaluation guide based on the assignment
The AI reads the assignment, generates a model answer, and builds an objective grading guide based on the task and the assessment tool.

  2. Evaluates each student’s work
Once a student submits, the AI reads the response and grades it using the evaluation guide — providing a justification for every evaluation.

Teachers can always review and edit the AI-generated evaluation before sharing it.

2. How accurate are AI Evaluations? Can I trust the grades?

Toddle AI uses models that are industry benchmarks for their analytical, advanced reasoning skills. It first builds a baseline solution and/or set of guidelines using your assignment instructions and assessment tools, then compares each student’s response against this evaluation guide. To ensure reliability, Toddle AI provides detailed justifications for every score it generates. Refer to this guide on the best practices for setting up your assignment to improve the reliability of the AI evaluations.

3. How does Toddle AI assess deterministic tasks like Math or Science problems?

For tasks with clear right or wrong answers—like equations, calculations, or factual responses—Toddle AI generates a baseline solution based on your assignment instructions and assessment tools. It then compares each student’s response directly to this solution, checking for accuracy, process, and alignment with the evaluation guide.

4. How does Toddle AI assess open-ended or creative responses on an assignment with no clear answers?

For open-ended tasks like essays or reflections, Toddle AI Evaluation does not rely on a single correct answer. Instead, it builds a set of evaluative guidelines to help assess the quality of work. You can shape these guidelines by making the instructions in the assignment explicit, and adding clear, objective assessment tools. Refer to Best practices for AI grading for setting up your assignment to improve the reliability of the AI evaluations.

5. How are AI Evaluations consistent across students?

Toddle AI uses the same, objective evaluation guide to evaluate every student’s submission. This guide turns your instructions and assessment tools into a clear, objective, task-specific internal tool for evaluation — so grading doesn’t vary from one student to the next.

When it works

1. What kinds of assignments does it work with?

Toddle AI’s Grading Assistant works with all assignments on Toddle. We will soon add support projects (DP/CP core and MYP projects).

2. What types of student submissions are supported?

The AI grading assistant works with all kinds of student submissions — whether typed, handwritten, drawn, or a mix of everything. Whether students upload printed lab reports, scanned worksheets with diagrams, or even hand-drawn mind maps, the AI can process and analyze them as long as the content is visible.

3. Which assessment tools are compatible with AI grading?

The grading assistant works with all assessment tools supported on Toddle.

4. Are there any limitations in how assignments must be structured for Toddle AI to work well?

Yes, we have listed the best practices on how to set up assignments to work well with AI grading in this guide.

5. When does the submission get evaluated by Toddle AI? Do I have to manually generate it?

Nope! As soon as the student submits, the AI begins evaluating the submission automatically — no action needed from the teacher, as long as AI evaluation is toggled on for that assignment.

Teacher control and flexibility

1. What if I disagree with the evaluation Toddle AI gives?

You always have the final say. AI Evaluation is meant to assist, not replace, teacher judgment. If something feels off, you can edit the evaluation, regenerate it with a custom prompt, or ignore it entirely. Nothing is final or shared with students or families until you approve it.

2. Are AI Evaluations visible to students or families? Will they know if their work was graded by AI?

No, students will not see if an assignment was evaluated using AI. The evaluation is visible only to the teacher, who must manually review, edit, and approve the grades before they’re shared with students. Once the assignment is marked as evaluated and shared, students will see it as teacher feedback - there’s no AI label or indicator. This ensures you remain in full control of what is communicated to learners and families.

Privacy and Safety

1. Is any school or student data used to train AI Evaluations?

No. Student or school data is never shared externally or used to train Toddle AI. Our AI models run on Toddle’s own servers - not third-party infrastructure - ensuring that your data is never exposed or sent outside your school’s ecosystem. The AI evaluates each submission using the assignment context and student work only - and none of this is reused for training.

2. What data does Toddle AI use while grading?

Toddle AI uses only the information available in the assignment setup and student submission. This includes:

  • Task instructions (from assignment metadata, description, submission template, resources, or teacher notes)

  • Assessment tools (rubric, checklist, continuum, etc.)

  • Learning goals

  • Student work (uploaded file or typed content)

No personal identifiers like student names, photos, or demographic data are used.

3. What safeguards are in place to keep my data secure?

Toddle follows industry-best practices to protect your data:

  • Toddle AI runs on Toddle’s own secure servers — no third-party model access

  • No PII (personally identifiable information) is used or shared with the AI

  • Fully compliant with GDPR, FERPA and the EU AI act

Your school remains in full control of your data — always.

Accessibility

1. Which languages are supported for AI Evaluations?

AI evaluations are currently supported in 50+ languages, with more languages being added regularly.
