Toddle provides you with an intuitive interface to configure the academic setup for your curriculum, such as setting up grading periods, grading methods, grade boundaries, custom evaluation criteria, and more.
Evaluation criteria are often used to assess students on learning goals and determine the extent to which they have been achieved. You can create custom evaluation criteria for learning goals such as skills and subject standards. Teachers can then assess students on these learning goals and their evaluation can be viewed both on the Gradebook and progress reports.
This article will give you a detailed walkthrough of configuring custom evaluation criteria for your curriculum.
Configuring evaluation criteria
In the admin portal, scroll to the ‘Programme level configurations’ section and click on ‘Academic setup’ for your curriculum.
Once you enter, scroll and click on the ‘Evaluation criteria’ section.
On this page, you can create custom evaluation criteria, map evaluation criteria to learning goals, and configure how ratings on learning goals should show for each grading period. Let’s explore each one of these options in detail.
Creating evaluation criteria
Under the ‘Create evaluation criteria’ section you will find all existing custom evaluation criteria, if any, for your curriculum. You can create a new evaluation criteria, by clicking on the ‘Add template’ button.
In the pop-up window, you can add criteria details such as title and select the grades to which this criteria will apply. Additionally, you can define the levels or categories within the criteria, arranged in descending order of progression. Each level includes:
Abbreviation: A short label for each level
Value: A descriptive label for the level
Description: An optional field to provide additional context or guidance for each level
Color code: A color code indicative of the level
Use the following options to define evaluation criteria:
‘Add another’: to add a new criterion definition
Cut circle: to assign a colour to a criterion definition
Arrows: to change the order of the criteria definitions
Trash: to delete a criterion definition
Once done, click on the ‘Add criteria’ button.
After creating the evaluation criteria, you can edit or archive it by clicking on the three dots menu. Furthermore, you can filter out the active/archived criteria using the ‘Status’ filter.
Mapping evaluation criteria
After defining your evaluation criteria, navigate to the ‘Map evaluation criteria’ section to link these criteria to specific learning goals. This mapping allows teachers to assess students on the learning goals using custom evaluation criteria in both the gradebook and progress reports.
You will see two tabs for the learning goals defined for your curriculum - ‘Subject standards’ and ‘Skills’. Click on ‘Edit’ at the top right to map evaluation criteria to these learning goals.
💡In case you have not added any evaluation criteria, you will be directed to the ‘Create evaluation criteria’ section.
Subject standards
If you have defined subject standards for your subjects, you can map custom evaluation criteria to them for evaluation purposes. By checking or unchecking boxes, you can enable the evaluation of relevant hierarchy levels of subject standards for each subject. Use the ‘Select all’ and ‘Deselect all’ options at the top of each criterion column to quickly apply or remove that criterion across all subjects at once.
Skills
This section establishes the evaluation criteria that can be used to evaluate the various skills and their sub-skills. All skills defined by you under ‘Academic setup’ > ‘Skills’ will be listed here. By checking or unchecking boxes, you can enable the evaluation of relevant skills and their sub-skills. Use the ‘Select all’ and ‘Deselect all’ options for bulk selection.
The custom evaluation criteria mapped by you in this section will be visible in the Gradebook and progress reports for teachers to assess students. Here’s a glimpse of how these will be displayed in the Gradebook.
The screenshot below highlights how the evaluation criteria show up in the Progress reports.
Configuring settings for learning goals
In the ‘Settings’ section, you can configure how you wish to manage ratings on learning goals across consecutive grading periods.
Here, you have two options:
'Carried forward to the next grading period,' where ratings from previous grading periods are carried forward, ensuring a continuous assessment of learning goals.
'Independent for each grading period', where ratings from the previous grading period are not carried forward. This enables teachers to start afresh in every grading period.
💡Note that regardless of this setting, ratings from previous grading period(s) are always visible in the grading history
